Rules
- FIBA Regulations apply (not NBA regulations), apart from changes listed below.
- All regulations or changes in regulations are made only after being agreed by the college league secretary and the president of CUBbC.
1. Game Formats
- One game is played against every other team in the division. The league is organised in 4 divisions of 6 teams each. At the end of Michaelmas and Lent, 2 teams of each division will move up to the next division, and other two will be demoted from the division above
- Each game consists of two twenty minutes halves with a five minute break in between.
- Games start at ten minutes past the hour, and must finish within the hour (for example, if the game is scheduled for 16:00 -17:00, then ideally game starts at 16:10 and must finish before 17:00). The proctor must make sure the final whistle is blown before the hour, no matter how much of the game remains. From the start of the next hour, next team has the right to warm up immediately on the court for the next scheduled game. The time shall be adjudged using the clock at Kelsey Kerridge, although personal watches can be used for convenience, if the times correspond.
- Each team is allowed to one timeout per half. A timeout shall last no more than one minute.
- Winner of the game receives two points, loser zero points, with one point for each team if the game is drawn. No extra time shall be played.
- It is the captains’ responsibility to upload the result to the excel spreadsheet provided by the college league secretary.
- The proctor must fill in the sign-up sheet at the reception in Kelsey Kerridge. Team captains should check whether the score has been noted down correctly.
- Games will be refereed by trained players who have signed up on the spreadsheet provided by the college league secretary. Referees will be paid 20 GBP per game, so each captain should pay 10 GBP per game.
- Teams which have failed to present at least four players by ten minutes past the hour will forfeit the game, subject to condition that the opposing team has met this requirement. A forfeited game is recorded as a 0:25 loss. If no players of the forfeiting team are present at ten minutes past the hour (and no advance notification is given to the league secretary), then a violation is registered and one point is deducted from the total number of points of the team.
- If two teams are tied the result of the game between the two teams decides the placing. If three or more teams are tied, a second classification is established by only taking into account wins/losses/draws in the games between the tied teams. If this process does not resolve the ties the for-against difference of all games played in the term determines the placing. If all these methods fail a coin shall be tossed in front of Great Saint Mary’s.
- Teams which have failed to present at least four players by 10 minutes past the hour will forfeit the game, subject to condition that the opposing team has met this requirement. A forfeited game is recorded as a 0:25 loss. If no players of the forfeiting team are present at 10 minutes past the hour (and no advance notification is given to the league secretary), then a violation is registered and 1 point is deducted from the total number of points of the team.
2. Game Rules
- Fouls are counted against the team; an individual’s fouls do not accrue against players personally. From the eighth team foul onwards, the opposing team is awarded two free-throws, and from the thirteenth team foul, two free throws and possession. Fouls are reset to zero at half time.
- When the jump-ball situation arises in the game, the alternating position rule shall be used to determine position.
- For the last two minutes of the game, the clock shall be stopped every time the ball is dead, and restarted as the ball becomes alive again. However, the game must still finish before the end of the hour, and therefore the remaining time shall be adjusted accordingly.
3. Teams and Players
- College teams must pay the entry fee before the start of the season. Failure to do so will result in a financial penalty (agreed upon by the college league secretary and the CUBbC president). Colleges should contact the college league secretary if there are difficulties in paying the entry fee.
- College teams should consist of strictly college current members, that means that alumni and postdocs don’t belong to College teams, but staff and fellows do. Society/Faculty teams must also consist of members of such society/faculty. Teams that don’t belong to a society, department, college, or other association, should report their squad members BEFORE the beginning of the season to the College League Secretary.
- During regular season (not during cuppers), to ensure player availability, each team will be allowed to include two players that don’t belong to their team per game. Graduate Colleges will be allowed three to enhance postdoc participation during regular season.
- Failing to adhere to rules 2 and 3 will result in the suspension of the player or, if deemed a serious violation by the committee, disqualification of the team.
- No more than ten players are allowed to play in one game, and at any time, there must not be more than five players on the bench. If asked by the proctor, the team must make clear which are the players and non-players of the team. To avoid confusion, the opposing team may ask for, with permission of the proctor and referees, non-players to separate from the players while watching (but not including the coach).
- If two teams in the league merge the joint team takes the position of the higher ranking team in the table. The College League Secretary must be informed about the merger at least two weeks before the beginning of Michaelmas term.
- In the case of a disqualifying foul, the Committee of CUBbC may enforce a suspension of the disqualified player and a fee towards the team. Two technical fouls or two unsportsmen like fouls, result in a disqualifying foul.
4. Cuppers
- The ranking in the league determines which teams qualify for cuppers. The details of this depend on the number of teams and available court slots and are therefore decided and published by the college league secretary at the beginning of lent term.
- If a Cuppers game finishes in a draw, an extra period shall be played with a jump ball, and the first team to score a basket will be the winner of the game. The president of CUBbC has responsibility for the decision, if further complications arise.
